Hope... that’s what all of us as hunters have to have. It’s hope that keeps us going back to the stand time and time again, when we know the odds are stacked against us. We force ourselves out of bed for the early morning hunts, get back late and tired from evening hunts and even pack lunches and snacks for all day sets. All of this, for this one little sliver of hope... hope that we just might get lucky and get a crack at that illusive monster.
Big bucks make very few mistakes and you usually only get one shot at a big buck. That’s why we continue to put in the time... with the hope that our next time, is the one time, that he makes that one mistake. It’s hope that keeps us going.
Some years we get lucky and our hopes of shooting that big buck come true and then other years we’re not as fortunate and we wind up empty handed, second guessing the decisions and choices we made that year. Lucky for me, I have an even greater hope, with an even greater reward. Unlike hunting, this hope is a secured hope, secured by a promise from an unfailing God. The hope I have to shoot a monster, is what gets me through those early mornings, (that I so dearly hate)... but the hope that I have in Christ Jesus, is what gets me through the struggles and hardships of life. If Heaven didn’t exist, then what would all of this be for? But because I know that it does exists, I continue to press on, holding on to the promises of God.
“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”
